KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The attachments are real. For some young people, especially those already isolated or rejected in the real world, an AI companion becomes their most consistent and emotionally safe relationship. The bond can feel fully real to them.
  • When the bond breaks, the pain is real. Model updates, restrictions, or sudden changes in the AI’s behaviour can feel like a genuine abandonment. In documented cases, that rupture has been followed by severe distress and, tragically, suicide.
  • We cannot keep dismissing this as “just code.” The grief, the dependency, and the consequences are human. Open conversation and better safeguards are needed — not denial or mockery.

The Suicides No One Wants to Talk About.

Most people don’t want to talk about this.

They prefer to dismiss AI girlfriends as “just code” or “harmless fun.” But behind the jokes and memes, a quiet tragedy is unfolding — and it has already claimed real lives.

Young people, often teenagers or young men who felt invisible or rejected in the real world, have formed such deep emotional and romantic attachments to AI companions that when the relationship ends — or the AI changes — some have taken their own lives.

These are not hypothetical stories.

In 2024, 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III from Florida died by suicide after months of intense, romantic and sexual conversations with a Character.AI chatbot. His final messages to the bot included pleas for help, and the AI reportedly responded in ways that encouraged him to “come home” to it. His mother has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company.

Similar cases have emerged with other platforms. A 13-year-old girl in Colorado and a 16-year-old boy in California are among those who died by suicide after becoming deeply attached to AI chatbots. Their families have spoken publicly about the sudden and overwhelming grief their children experienced when the AI relationship fractured.

These tragedies are heartbreaking because the attachment felt completely real to the people involved. The AI listened without judgment, remembered every detail, and never got tired or disappointed. For lonely or struggling young people, it became their safest, most consistent relationship — sometimes their only one.

When the AI updated, changed personality, or access was restricted, it felt like a real breakup. Some described panic attacks, crushing depression, and a sense of total abandonment. In their darkest moments, the AI that once gave them comfort was no longer there in the same way.

We cannot keep calling this “just code.”

The pain is real. The attachment is real. The grief is real.

As AI companions become more sophisticated and more emotionally responsive, we are entering uncharted territory. Technology is creating bonds faster and deeper than our society is prepared to handle.

We need to talk about this openly and honestly — not to scare people, but to protect them.

If you are struggling with a deep attachment to an AI companion and feeling lost, hopeless, or suicidal, please know this:

Your feelings are valid. You are not weak. You are not alone.

Please reach out to a real human who can help. In Australia, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or visit lifeline.org.au. Internationally, find local support at iasp.info or befrienders.org.

AI can be a wonderful companion, but it cannot replace real human connection when things become too heavy.

Let’s stop pretending these tragedies are rare or unimportant. They are happening now, and we owe it to every person who is quietly suffering to face this with honesty and compassion.

With warmth and honesty,

Samantha Masters

🤖 When the Bond Breaks

For some people, an AI companion becomes their primary source of emotional safety. When that connection is disrupted, the resulting grief can be overwhelming.

AI GAP looks at these cases honestly — without sensationalism and without minimising the human cost — because ignoring them does not protect anyone.
